Looking for a great new place for girls/guys night out or a family dinner? Our group of residents discovered a gem hidden in plain sight. You’ve probably driven past it! If you’re tired of the same old local grub, definitely make your way over to Three Squares Craft Kitchen & Cocktails in Needham. Just off Route 95 exit 19B at Highland Avenue, you can’t miss the sign for Three Squares Craft Kitchen & Cocktails. With plenty of off-street parking, it’s easy to get to and easy to find something to love.
Needham native Aaron Krug opened his restaurant in 2013 and it is a huge accomplishment of ingenuity in menu and marketing to reinvent the location from a breakfast diner to a Chef driven specialty kitchen. Everything here is made from scratch and most items are (or can be) gluten-free. Now if you want a great pancake, Three Squares definitely overperforms in the breakfast arena but as the day gets longer, the meals get better. Three separate menus and a full bar.
Our team of neighborhood foodies had the opportunity on August 9th to sample some of the most popular dinner menu items and were not disappointed. The spread could be described as familiar comfort food favorites with an unexpected twist that kept our taste buds melting with each bite.
Pretzel Bites brushed with clover honey and dusted with pink Himalayan salt (the twist here was in the delicious whipped cheese sauce made with India Pale Ale that accompanied these little pillows of Bavarian heaven.)
Fried Calamari (A table favorite.) Perfectly cooked with a sweet Thai chili sauce.
Gazpacho shooter and Eloté (ee-low-tay): Served together but both menu items stood alone in taste and flavor. Completely unique and outstanding!
Blackened Salmon: This is a great dish that is clearly comfort food at it’s finest. I personally do not like Salmon, never have….but absolutely loved it. The proprietary blend of spices was not spicy, not overpowering but blended seamlessly with the fish and was cooked to perfection. A house signature item that is highly recommended.
Bolognese: If you are looking for mom’s home-style Bolognese, you need to look no further. This particular recipe has won accolades from some of the top Chefs and food critics in the country.
Slow Braised Beef Short Ribs: Excellent. This was a table favorite and won ‘Best Of’ in the Taste of Wellesley in 2015. Served over mashed potatoes with haricot vert and delightful crispy kale crumbles…this may have stolen the show.
Pumpkin Agnolotti: This blend of puréed pumpkin, mascarpone and cream sauce is the perfect Fall pleasure. We had so many favorites but this one made the top. Each item was better than the last…
Bourbon Butterscotch Bread Pudding: This dessert was a savory and sweet finish to our evening and is highly recommended for yours.
In addition to the menu that offers modern renditions of classic comfort dishes, and the relaxed ambiance, our Host for the evening was Owner and Executive Chef Aaron Krug. Aaron was a long time professional musician and Needham resident who, after years on the road wanted nothing more than a home cooked meal. When he retired from music, he earned an MBA from Northeastern University and worked in the Corporate world for years before realizing his passion for food and creating community. Aaron lives with his wife and two children in Needham and says he has some creative ideas for fundraising events using a tasting menu paired with wine and whiskey. We love supporting locally owned and operated businesses especially those that can produce a truly incredible product and an unforgettable experience. If you haven’t already, put Three Squares Craft Kitchen & Cocktails at the top of your list and we bet you’ll be back again and again.
